What does a Web Prototype Look Like?

A web interface prototype – also known as a set of Wireframes – is a minimalist version of the final website or online application.

The prototype will use little or no colours or graphic design. Instead, its purpose is to indicate the interaction design – i.e. how the user will interact with the website.

Wireframes can be web-based (i.e. you can view it using a browser), or they may simply be printed documents or electronic documents.

At Heraghty Internet Consultants, we favour using web-based Wireframes, since they are interactive and thus offer a better simulation of the user experience. Paper prototypes, by contrast, can become confusing when there are lots of pages.

Is Prototyping Necessary? What are the Benefits?

Prototyping is always useful, and is particularly necessary for large or complex website or applications, that have lots of features and functions.

The advantages of building prototypes first, rather than going straight to the graphic design, HTML coding or development stages, are:

• It’s quicker and easier to make changes to a prototype than to a working site or application
• The graphic designers, web designers (HTML coders) or developers can see what they have to build
• There is less room for misunderstanding between the owner and the developers than there would be if text documents, such as functional specs, were used to communicate the design
• Building a prototype at the start of the project can save money by avoiding costly changes to the code or look-and-feel later on
• You can conduct an expert usability review or usability testing on a prototype
• You are more likely to achieve a user-friendly website or application by first building and evolving a usable prototype
